Breakfast and explore the ancient city of Perugia, one of Umbria’s most picturesque and elegant cities with rich Etruscan and Roman history. The architecture of the city has changed little in more than 400 years. Admire monuments from many different periods: Fontana Maggiore, a masterpiece of Gothic sculpture, the Palazzo dei Priori, the town hall that dates back to Perugia’s golden age, the Etruscan Arch from the 3rd century BC, and the Rocca Paolina fortress with its unexpected but fascinating underground passages. Lunch on your own to taste local food. In the afternoon reach Assisi, delightful medieval town, with flower-hung streets, lovely views over the Umbrian countryside and fountain-splashed piazzas, famous for a single event – the birth of Francis, the most revered saint in Italy. The Basilica, begun two years after the death of the saint in 1228, becaming one of the most beautiful shrines in the Christian world. It is composed of two churches and a crypt housing the Saint’s tomb. The lower Basilica was decorated by the greatest painters of the 13th and 14th century: Cimabue, Giotto, the Lorenzetti brothers, and Simone Martini. The upper Basilica is adorned by Giotto’s frescoes illustrating the life of St Francis. The visit continues with the the Piazza del Comune, taking us back in time with its mansions dating back to the Middle Ages, and the Basilica of St Clare, the founder of the Poor Clares and buried in the church where the crucifix that spoke to St Francis is still conserved. URBINO - GRADARA



Breakfast and departure to Urbino, “Cradle of Renaissance” or “The Perfect City”, a real treasure suspended on a hill. Guided walking tour of the historical centre, World Heritage of Unesco, characterized by its streets called “piole” that run up and down to the city, surrounded by architectural masterpieces. The visit begins from the historic centre, made up of a tight urban fabric with suggestive spaces which surrounded the ducal residence: the Rampa of Giorgio Martini (helical flight), Renaissance Square, the famous façade of “Torricini” from where you can enjoy a wonderful sight from the Fortress of Albornoz. The center of town is dominated by the Ducal Palace: an out-and-out city inside the city, expression of the genius Duke Federico of Montefeltro, as well as birthplace of the Italian Renaissance and painters such as Raffaello Sanzio and Piero della Francesca. Reach Repubblica square, the meeting place of many students who attend the University Carlo Bo (one of the older in Italy). Lunch in a characteristic restaurant in S. Francesco square. From the square, going up to the hill you come to the Raphael house, where he was born. Son of the painter and writer Giovanni Santi, gave him the first painting techniques along with the ideals of the Renaissance, learned in the scholarly court of Montefeltro. The interior has been furnished from the Accademia Raffaello that has its headquarters here, including works of art by artists more or less known stands the famous “Madonna con il bambino” attributed to the young Raphael. Breakfast and departure to Corciano, a little medieval town in the Umbrian hills, surrounded by two concentric city walls with a gate defended by a picturesque circular tower. Visit this perfectly preserved medieval town strolling through the narrow streets and will admire the St. Mary tower, Palazzo della Corgna and the paintings by Perugino in St Mary church. Lunch on your own to taste local food. In the afternoon proceed to the picturesque town of Gubbio, one of the Italy’s best preserved medieval towns. A walk through its alleys is like going back in time. The main square is a daring construction, a so-called hanging-square upon which rises the impressive town hall: the Palace of the Consuls. Breakfast and departure to the charming town of Spello, the former Roman colony “Hispellum” built with the local pink limestone taken from Subasio Mountain. Large parts of its fortifications remain intact. We will walk through the medieval piazzas, the Roman arches, and the narrow streets overlooking the Umbrian Valley to the Santa Maria Maggiore church to admire a magnificent Pinturicchio cycle frescoes, one of the most impressive works of art made by Pinturicchio. Breakfast and departure to Orvieto, probably Umbria's most peculiar town, built high up on a volcanic rock of tufa-stone. It was founded by the Etruscans more than 2700 years ago. In the heart of the medieval town we will find one of Italy's most astonishing gothic churches, the Cathedral, with the Luca Signorelli’s colorful frescoes vividly depicting the Apocalypse in the chapel of San Brizio. The streets, the noble and public palaces, the ancient houses, all built in tufa stone, give Orvieto an original and unique atmosphere. Orvieto is just as interesting below ground as it is above. The creation of the underground city started by the Etruscan and continued beyond the middle ages. There are thousands of grottoes along with cisterns, medieval old presses, millstone among other things. Orvieto is also famous for its ceramics and wines, most notably the Orvieto Classico. Called Tular in ancient times, which literally means “border”, the city was an important centre between the Etruscan and the Umbrian civilizations. SAN MARINO - SAN LEO



Breakfast and departure to San Marino, the world's oldest republic and Europe's third smallest state. It lies 657 m above sea level with spectacular views of the surrounding countryside and Adriatic coast, and is situated only 10km from Rimini. Legend has it that the founder of San Marino, a stonemason, arrived from the island of Rab in Dalmatia and climbed Mt. Titano to found a small community of Christians, persecuted for their faith by the Emperor Diocletian. San Marino is made up of a few towns dotted around the mountain sides. The capital of San Marino is itself called 'San Marino' and is situated high up on a mountain top. The capital is surrounded by a wall and three distinct towers overlook the rest of the country. The site "San Marino: Historic Centre and Mount Titano" has become part of the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008. Lunch on your own to taste local food. Breakfast and departure to Panicale. Anciently a medieval castle, Panicale is still surrounded by its original 12th century defensive walls, and is set in a dominating position above Lake Trasimeno. Within its walls, the town is structured in a circular shape that peaks at the highest point of the city from which it is possible to enjoy a breathless view of the Lake and the surrounding hills. Just outside the walls of Panicale we will find a treasure in a small oratory, the famous fresco made by Perugino, depicting the Martyr of St. Sebastian. Lunch on your own to taste local food. Continue on to Città della Pieve, situated at the border between Tuscany and Umbria. En route, stop to a traditional olive mill for visiting the mill and sampling the extra virgin olive oil produced here. Our last stop is Città della Pieve, a village built with the local red brick, that gives it a golden hue particularly at sunset. The use of the brick goes back to the beginning of the 13th century and shows the bond with the town of Siena. Città della Pieve is mainly famous as the birthplace of the Renaissance painter Pietro Vannucci, called Perugino, master of Raphael, who left some of his major works in several buildings of town, such as the amazing fresco of the “Adoration of the Magi” in the Oratorio dei Bianchi.
